    Free searchable surname index and databases. Also megabytes of storage space for your WEB genealogy GED2HTML data (Minimal yearly rent; they will convert to HTML, if you wish).
    WorldConnect
    New Rootsweb searchable GEDCOM project.
    GenServ
    International database of GEDCOM files with several million names. You must send a GEDCOM file to join and pay minimal yearly fee. Uses e-mail for searching and reports. Free to all: unlimited requests for counts of any surname in database.
    Roots Surname List Interactive Search
    Social Security Death Index Interactive Search
    From RootsWeb, I think it is the best SSDI database
    Social Security Death Index--Online Search
    Provided by Ancestry.com Search--SSDI is free as are several other large databases.
    Genealogy Online
    Link to the searchable 1% 1880 U.S. Census. Also genealogy resources, Microfilm Catalogs and FTP.

    Numbering System in Genealogy
    Richard Pence gives clear instructions and examples for several numbering systems.
    Soundex Code Generator
    Much easier and more accurate than figuring it out for yourself.
    Mapblast
    I use this mapmaker to find sites even within my own city--and it's fast.
    U.S. Gazetteer
    Locate U.S. cities, towns, and villages; U.S. Census summary information attached.
    AltaVista Translations
    Language translation tool--will translate a whole web page or sentences you type to/from many languages. Certainly not perfect, but does help when you are trying to read that site in German.
