A True Account
Not too long ago, in Virginia, a certain small, shallow stream overflowed its
banks in winter when the snows melted. Seated by this river on a bench, was an
old man. In Summer he could cross on foot, stepping on certain stones, but not
now. So he sat and waited until some horse-men would come along to carry him
across. Presently he heard the hoof beats of 4 horses. Our old, wise man looked
into the eyes of the first three horsemen as they passed, making no effort to
call out to them. Presently the fourth horseman came by, and the old man,
freezing, shouted with all his might, "Sir, will you help me?". The fourth
horseman stopped, galloped over to the Grandpa and said, "Sir, how can I be
of service!". "Please help me across the river", was the reply. The horseman
said: "I will and I will also deliver you to your home!", and so it happened.
As the old man was helped to dismount, the horseman asked, "Why didn't you stop one
of the other three horsemen?". The senior elder replied: "I saw no love in their
eyes". The horseman said: "I like your answer, sir. What is your name?" He said
"I am Adam Adamson and yours?". The horseman replied: "Thomas Jefferson"!.
